Julie a day at the Beach Hut

Julie our wonderful Aunt, great friend and spiritual mentor - you will be greatly missed by us all.
As a passionate member of the Herne Bay 145 Beach Hut Appreciation Society; Julie your special August visits will always be remembered.  Our thanks go to Meg, Elizabeth, Miri and the many others who made Julie’s visits to Herne Bay so memorable.
The memories of the 06:00 start from Beaconsfield to “miss the traffic” and to arrive at the Hut for Breakfast by 09:00 will always be treasured. Maybe not the early start for Elizabeth or Meg  but the transformation on arrival at the Hut – when on stand- by was John Redfern (Hut  Custodian) with frying pan in hand. Some of these last minute dashes occurred after a phone call the day before for a green light to go.
In spite of hold ups on the M25, the early start and anything else that got in the way - the first part of the mission was to have a swim or paddle whatever the weather.  Then duly prepared Julie would produce the whole cooked breakfast ingredients from the contents of a few bags out of the boot of the car – magic!
Activities through the day would involve much storytelling, sewing, laughter and good fun. That has always been a tradition at the Hut for all of us.
Two swims later - lunch (again out of the magic bags) then more sewing, reading and laughter.
Supper would be around 6 pm and the Custodian would duly take the order for cod and chips, plaice and chips and scuttle off to the finest Herne Bay Fish-shop to acquire said merchandise. Narrowly avoiding a queue hopping incident at the Fish shop the Custodian would return to the Hut to lay on the Fish and Chip supper with wine and trimmings.  Seagulls would look on hungrily and their wait was usually rewarded by the tail end of the chip packet.
Departure back to Beaconsfield would quickly follow to “miss the traffic” and arrive home about 10.30 at night – it would have made anyone half her age exhausted just thinking about it.
The Hut has featured significantly in all our family visits to Herne Bay – as a Tribute to Julie  I think it is fitting to remember Granny Bell and Pop Davies, Jean and Jack, John and Gwen, Mary and Bert,  and all the family and the photo in the gallery from 1956 says it all.
Rest in peace Great Aunt Julie you will be forever be in our thoughts and prayers.
